Blow Drying:
Step By Step:
- Consult with your model or client and ask them a series of questions on their hair. What type of hair do they have? oily? dry? damaged? is the hair coloured or natural? how often do they wash their hair? what products do they already use if any?
- once your consultation is finished and you have an understanding of your models hair, wash the hair with shampoo and conditioner over the basin.
- Towel dry the hair roughly for a few minutes and blast the hair until it is damp (Do not dry the hair completely and try and stay away from the roots while blasting the hair.
- Once the hair is damp, use products such as moose, heat protection and salt spray to give the hair texture. (Apply to midlengths of hair, to much product on the roots will cause oiliness.)
- Section the hair neatly, clean sections are very important for blow drying.
- Use a rounded brush or a paddle brush depending on your desire finish.
- Make sure the hair is not wider than the brush
- Do not use the hairdryer without the nozzel.
- Now you can start the process, using one hand place the brush underneath the section of hair and blast up and down on the roots.
- Once the root has lift, face the hairdryer downwards and slowly work down the hair using the hair brush to drop and relift the hair peice.
- To create a curl, simply roll the hair up onto the brush and blast with the heat and release.
Evaluation:
I found blow drying difficult yet easy. I found the technique is easy to grasp once you get going but the end finish was where my issue started. I went for a curly blow dry and I feel I did not achieve this. The constant motion of your hands and arms moving make it very difficult and you arms start to ache alot, this slowed me down with the blowdrying.
50's, 60's and 70's Hair-
Step by step:
- Heat up your rollers, gather enough clips to secure rollers
- remember, the smaller the roller, the smaller the curl. Depending on your client or models hair and desire look, choose your roller size accordingly.
- Start off at the front of the hair (Fringe area) sort the parting out, as selected by the client or yourself depending on the hair style
- It is very important to keep your sections clean
- Collect the section and brush through with a comb
- collect the desired roller and using tension, roll the roller down the hair and let it sit on the section NOT THE NEXT SECTION.
- Complete the front of the hair first in the direction you want the hair to fall
- use large rollers for all down the back of the hair to create a lift
- use brick work technique for the rest of the hair
- once the rollers are set and cooled in the hair, release the rollers
- style the hair according to the look you are going for
- Prepare the hair by brushing through and ensuring no knots and tangles.
- using a pin tail comb and section the front section of the hair off.
- brush the remaining hair back into a hair bobble and secure,
- You will be creating a bridal style Chignon, backcomb the hair to fill out and give it a stability ready for the roll.
- roll the hair upwards and in towards the scalp and secure with bobby pins.
- use pins to bring each corner inwards and ensure no gaps.
- using the remaining hair at the front, curl, plait and dress the hair accordingly.
- Once the hair is complete, you can now add any accessories such as tiaras and veils to the hair.
Evaluation
The Chignon has to be one of the easiest hairstyles I have managed to master. I have managed to keep the hair sleek and steady however my use of accessories was not excellent.
Step by step:
5,8 and 11 plait:
5,8 and 11 plait:
- Brush hair free of knots
- section of two pieces of hair at the front
- use the sections of hair and create 5 individual strands
- Use those five sections to create a basket style weave.
- Take the first left section of the strands over and under the next strands
- make sure this section is then on the right side
- continue the under and over step until the plait is complete
- Now the five stranded plait is complete, use one of the sections set aside previously.
- Plait normally and for every strand that gets taken over, weft through the five strand plait to keep it together
- repeat this on the opposite side too.
Dutch Braid-
- Start of with three sections
- plait as backwards gathering hair every time one section is crossed over to create lift in the middle only.
- Continue until finished.
Evaluation:
Considering this is a large stranded plait, I immediately thought it would be difficult. Starting off I struggled to keep tension within the plait but after trying for a second time things worked well. I think for someone who struggles with hair this is a great ending to my first 5,8&11 stranded plait. The waterfall plait didnt go as planned, which was displeasing. The dutch braid however went fantastic, I found this is the way I usually plait hair anyway, which made things much easier!
Beach Hair:
Step by step:
- Ensure the hair is free of knots
- prep the hair using products such as mousse, dry shampoo or sea salt spray to ensure tecture
- brush through and section around 5 strands of hair depending on thickness
- using the first section, plait or twist the hair and using a straightener, press firmly on the hair for several seconds.
- Allow the sections to cool and continue round the rest of the hair.
- release the twists or plaits and using another generous amount of mousse, scrunch the hair until desired wave is complete.
- One other way to produce this look is to dampen the hair with water, apply mousse and sea salt spray and using a hair dryer and defuser blast the hair until waves appear. Use another generous amount of moose to finish off the look.
My first attempt at both the blow drying waves and twists were good however, i did not obtain the look I wanted. I tried for a second time, which I have included in the pictures, and my outcome was more beach waves than bed hair!
Sleek Pony and French Twist:
- Depending on length and type of hair, you can separate a triangle section on the crown and plac this in the pony tail later on.
- Brush through and gather the hair into one hand.
- have your model tilt their head back slightly to brush underneath to minimise the chance of bumps.
- using a hair bobble, secure the hair and finish off my taming stray hairs.
- using a strand of hair from underneath the ponytail, wrap around the hair and secure with bobby pins.
Evaluation: I chose to complete the ponytail as a whole head of hair rather than sectioning. I wanted to attempt the harder option as opposed to the easier one. I think my overall look is clean and tight although there is a tiny bump below the hair bobble.
Timed Assessment:
Beach Hair:
My timed assessment turned out brilliantly well. The hair, which was my main concern, was a complete success. I got the finish I wanted and the volume in a short amount of time. I used dry shampoo, mousse and sea salt spray to start and plaited the hair in 5 sections. I used straighteners to heat up the plaits and waited for them to cool. Once i released the plaits I used the straighteners again , this time to create a deeper wave which gave me the overall finish I wanted. I then backcombed the hair and added a little more sea salt spray and mousse.
S Waves Master class
Step By Step:
- Soak the hair with water, be sure to cover your model and the floor around you to stop any water falling over the model and floor.
- use a comb to brush through the hair and even out the water in the hair.
- Bring the hair back making sure you comb through to the end of the hair.
- place two fingers onto the hair
- use the comb again and comb the hair (underneath the fingers) back towards the face.
- Using the comb, push towards yourself and turn the comb and push up. Use your fingers to pinch the hair to create a lift.
- Comb the hair below back towards the back of the hair.
Heated Waves:
- Section the hair in equal parts
- using tongs/curlers curl the strand of hair and leave for 15 seconds and release. Try to keep the curl in a curl form and secure with a pin or clip and wait to cool.
- Release the curls once done and brush and place hair into a wave and hairspray.
Evaluation:
Another hairstyle to conquer... almost. I've always wanted to do this style of hair and I have never been able to do it. Lottie always makes things easier in lessons and I think I did a great job for my first attempt. The first time I didn't wet the hair enough (first image) so I brushed it out and retried it and it turned out much better, not perfect, but the wave was there. The dry one, which was made with curlers and dry hair turned out awful, I tried it on myself at home and it turned out much better so maybe it was the dolls head as the hair is really coarse and short.
