THE BRANDS

For this unit, I have narrowed down to a few brands I would like to base my work around. I have left out brands such as MAC, illamasqua and Bobbi Brown due to the fact they are brands I know very well and I am comfortable with them. I am leaning more towards the luxury brands as a way to challenge myself. I have chosen Charlotte Tilbury, Givenchy, Tom Ford, Ellis Faas and Chanel and I used Polyvore, an online tool to create a few product mood boards which I feel highlight the brands styles.

Charlotte Tilbury-
Tom Ford-
Chanel-
 Givenchy-
 Ellis Faas-

I created several mood boards for these brands on Polyvore. This was to get a rough idea on how these brands package and present their products and more importantly, polyvore sort their images based on popularity so these images are also popular, which could mean they are the brands signature products.  I created these to see which I prefer and to also see what kind of style these brands have. For instance, based on these mood boards, I feel Ellis Faas is a more minimal beauty brand based upon the packaging, however if you research a little deeper into the brabd, its far from minimal! Tom Ford is quite bold, as it is with both its clothing collections and beauty collections and Chanel can be very classic, as always. My brain was sparked with excitement over the Charlotte Tilbury packaging and design, I prefer it to all the other brands included here, I have never owned anything from Charlotte Tilbury as its a little pricey but I am saving up to get one of the kits!

BEAUTY AND THE BRAND; AN INTRODUCTION

Semester Two of my second year at Solent has commenced and this semester, much to my excitment, is fashion and beauty based!

The Breif...

'This unit aims to develop the students understanding of how make-up and hair design concepts for fashion and beauty are developed from idea conception through to realization. The outcome produced for this unit is to be an advertising campaign for your given beauty brand. Emphasis will be placed on the research and development of ideas and will engage students in a deeper understanding of the practical and theoretical approaches required to produce innovative visual outcomes. Students will be expected to build on existing technical skills and theoretical knowledge from Level 4, producing work to a professional standard for an identified fashion and/or beauty market.

Through an employability-focused approach, students will be also introduced to the diverse roles of the make-up and hair artist/designer across editorial, advertising and fashion arenas. The unit, with particular emphasis on the timed assessment, will encourage students to develop key transferable skills in communication, collaboration and negotiation'

Areas of Study:

  • The role of the photographer, stylist, fashion designer, make up and hair designer in relation to the rest of a creative team, and in commercial and creative contexts.
  • The development of an idea from initial concept to final execution; research techniques and sources.
  • Organizational aspects of working with a make-up and hair design team.
  • The relationship between lighting, post production, make-up and hair design and styling; how they complement or restrict one another.
  • Construction and editing of images for fashion and beauty industry
  • The presentation of ideas through verbal and visual media
  • Giving appropriate critical feedback.

Beauty and the Brand – Portfolio  The Brand.  You will be required to research and define a specified make up brand. This will include the 5 P’s – Product, Packaging, Presentation, Promotion and Price Point. As part of your definition you will be required to create a research/sketch blog, to show your visual and written research as well as any test shots and final images. You will also be required to write a 500-word evaluation of your brand. It is envisaged that the understanding of your, and the brands of others in your group will give you a body of background knowledge essential to grasp why the brands and products available in retail today are so popular. You should attend all technical, seminar and lecture sessions, documenting and reflecting upon feedback from tutors to show your commitment and development of ideas. It is anticipated that the management of this project will help you to start working more independently in preparation for your final year of the degree.

The Beauty. Your research has to include visual investigations that reference the fashion/beauty ideals and trends discussed in the sessions.  This will allow you to put the theme of beauty in context using make-up ideas in the form of design templates and work in progress styled examples. The concept development must reference your design ideas, presented in a coherent and logical format but it must also highlight your technical skills.

To support your understanding of Brand’s identity and beauty, you are required to construct 6 Beauty Images that evidence the advanced and refined technical skills learned within this unit. You need to shoot:

2 Advertising images – Day & Night looks

2 Editorial looks – Mini spread exploring the theme/story behind the catwalk

2 Catwalk looks reflecting your chosen brand and the Spring/Summer 2016 trends.

This unit, as understood by myself, is to learn how to adapt my style of work to that of a brand or style of work. I will choose my brand, analyse and investigate them thoroughly to obtain the neccessary information on topics such as marketing, packaging, product, brand history, style of work both practically and theoretically and also to allow myself to keep up to dat with the latest spring/summer 16 trends throughout the world. My aim is to utilise all mediums of sources such as social media accounts, magazines, counters visits, online images and information and where possible, books on the specific brand. This area of work, particularly fashion is something I am very interested in and have been throughout my time here at solent.
